#3114-B CD 136.7 - 158 PATD. OCT. 15 1872. Aqua.
Three segmented threads. Embossed on the inner skirt.... the "5" is embossed over a "2."
Note this insulator has all the features of a CD 136.7, except it has an inner skirt. A much scarcer variant than a CD 136.7 or a CD 158 Boston Bottle Works.
This type insulator was illustrated and described in Partrick & Carter’s 1878 Catalogue, as shown in the third photo. Partrick & Carter, a supply house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, offered insulators with a smooth pinhole, segmented threads, or a regular thread. The P&C listing claims telegraph superintendents pronounced this type insulator to be the "perfection" of all glass insulators.
Among the very nicest examples we've encountered. The pinhole cavity is lower than normal, creating an abundance of thick glass in both the dome and skirt. Plus, the glass color is darker than is usually encountered.
An especially attractive jewel in very near mint condition.
Worth a premium for all the special properties.
Update, 5:35 P.M. Tuesday, July 4: Note the text in the Partrick & Carter ad (third image) states this insulator can be made with "an extra flange or petticoat on the inside." The same mold was used to produce insulators with or without an "inner skirt."
