"D" mold variant. Also known as the "Tin Mold" or "Sheet metal Mold."
There are swirled EC&M's and then there are SWIRLED EC&M's! Wow! A wild example with heavy, olive amber impurities throughout the glass.
A small number of swirled EC&M's have been found in California along the route of the Ridge Telephone Company line which was completed in 1878, becoming the world's first long distance telephone line. The line was used to control water flow from reservoirs at high elevation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The water traversed through many miles of ditches to various hydraulic gold mining operations far below. It extended from the reservoirs to numerous California towns and mining camps including Graniteville, North Bloomfield, North Columbia, North San Juan and French Corral.
This exceptional beauty was discovered in July, 1979 by a collector searching for insulators on the Ridge, and it remains one of the more spectacular examples known.
Made with thick, heavy glass, the base survived with no damage. Unfortunately, the insulator was the victim of freezing and split from expansion. The entire front remains in one piece, from mold line to mold line. The reverse section was split into two pieces. The insulator was glued back together, and the juncture remains very well hidden with all the olive amber impurities inside the glass.
Perhaps a golden opportunity to purchase a spectacular example for a more affordable amount than a very near mint unit.
