Description

#3514      729.3       J.S. KEELING      16 B'WAY N.Y.        Aqua.

J.S. Keeling advertised in the mid-1860's as the "successor" to "Tillotson & Company," taking over the 16 Broadway address.  L.G. Tillotson & Company was formed at that time, with Tillotson moving to a Dey Street address.

Keeling offered various types of insulators, as seen on a page from an 1860's catalogue (fourth image).  The ad stated "Telegraph Insulators of All Patterns."  The advertisement further included "from my own moulds.  A large stock always on hand."

Embossed "Keeling" insulators are rarely found in any color.  A few "blackglass" examples are known.  Aqua specimens are perhaps a touch rarer, with only three or four units having been seen.

Discovered recently in a southeastern Pennsylvania shop.

Numerous, attractive folds and creases on the glass surface create an "old" appearance.  Additionally, white particles and foam, most noticeable on the reverse, add charm and character to this rarity.

Shallow chip on top surface of the lower wire ridge (as seen at center in second photo above the "16" embossing) is approximately the size of two, side-by-side fingernails.  Otherwise, excellent condition with only one shallow, match head flake!
