Description

#3694      BROOKS   PAT   AUG   6TH   67       C.P. R.R.        Impressed lettering.      Iron with glass.

Note... this is the rarely encountered variant with impressed lettering, rather than a typical embossed type.

This "rams horn" style insulator, patented by David Brooks in 1867, was inserted into the underside of a crossarm.  The Brooks insulator of this design/size was used to a large degree along the Pennsylvania Railroad and on other eastern railroad routes.  Due to moist soil conditions in the east, very few survived in that part of the country after being discarded on the ground.

They were also used extensively along the route of the Central Pacific Railroad, constructed in the 1860's across California, Nevada and into Utah.  Most of those examples were marked with additional "C.P.R.R" lettering.  A dry climate in many areas of that line route has resulted in examples surfacing in nice condition.

There are various configurations of markings found on the insulators used along the C.P.R.R. route, most having embossed (raised) lettering.  This type, with impressed or incuse letters, is rarely encountered.

Sound, aged condition.

Update 11:55 A.M. Saturday, February 24.  The condition of the metal is quite nice, with attractive grayish oxidation, but no rusted areas.  Glass appears excellent with no chips or other damage.
