Description

#1389      CD 113       (Raised dots).       Amethyst.

A lighter color than is typically encountered in this item... most are dark purple.

The top has wear... likely used on the end of a char leg to protect a telegraph operator from electrical shock during storms with lightning.

Known as the “Braille” due to the resemblance of the raised dots on the skirt looking similar in appearance to Braille.  To the best of our knowledge, all were found in western Canada, including eastward into the province of Alberta.

Until a couple years ago, it was generally believed these colorful communication insulators were produced in Canada.  Research by collector David Bethman revealed that some were produced at the Anacortes Glass Company in Anacortes, Washington.  It is possible some may have been made in the Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada area, prior to Anacortes going into business.  This is however, just speculation.

Shallow base chip removes three drip points.  Partially flaked drip points.
