Description

#2170       PATENT PENDING       Amethyst.

Embossed "Patent Pending" in a circular pattern around the top area.  Darius Stebbins, of Wallingford, Connecticut, received a patent for this type lightning rod insulator in June, 1867.  The "Pending" embossing on the insulator indicates the mold for this insulator was produced between the time the patent was applied for, and when it was granted.

The insulators were molded with a thin, solid top.  After production, the thin tops were "punched out" to create a hole though the entire insulator.

Circular chip around the hole at top is consistent with the the glass being removed at the factory, when the "punch out" process was executed.  Some flaking at the bottom edge and two flat base chips.

Stebbins insulators rarely surface for sale!
