Description

#2446      CD 154      HEMINGRAY-42       Carnival iridescent.

Excellent rainbow effect on this beauty!  As nice of color as we've ever seen on a "carnival glass" Hemingray 42.

Only a very limited number of Hemingray 42 have been found with this special treatment.  A small number of them were recovered along a railroad in northern Illinois by a lineman collector in the late 1960's or early 1970's.

Both Hemingray and Corning Pyrex insulators were produced in various styles for a period of time with this special surface treatment.  Oxides were sprayed on the glass when it was still at high temperature, shortly after being molded at the glass factory.

Diesel soot on the base and interior surface was never cleaned off, which actually helps to demonstrate the excellent rainbow coloration on the outside surface.

Very near mint+ condition and great rainbow coloration make this an ultimate example!

Update: 6:50 P.M Friday, October 28.  A collector has raised the question of how certain we are that the iridescent carnival coloring on the exterior of the insulator is authentic, factory applied.  We are fully aware of activities in recent years where an unscrupulous individual had old, clear insulators carnival coated at a modern day facility and sold them as authentic factory produced examples.  For that reason, we are extremely careful with items offered in our auctions.  We look for various characteristics which indicate the carnival coloring is old.  In the case of this item, we see the carnival coloring was applied from the bottom up. Authentic examples were treated that way ( the known bogus examples we've seen were done from the opposite direction).  This insulator has a couple minor (about pinhead size) surface flakes that removed the coating, rather than being sprayed over.  There's a very slight wire rub on the surface of the wire groove, which is quite consistent with how it would appear on an authentic, used example.  Included is a thin layer of soot buildup on the entire inside of the skirt and the inner skirt, very consistent with an old, used example.  There is soot residue on the underside of the wire ridge, between the embossed lettering and between the drip points.  Authenticity cannot be 100% certain on any examples, but we are 99.99% sure on this one.  It's as authentic in appearance as any we've ever seen.  The bottom line is that a person either purchases no carnival glass items, or you buy the ones that look extremely authentic.  This one looks extremely authentic.
